Adrian and Gillian Bayford's £148.7 million win, and what followed
Friday 10 August 2012 · EuroMillions
Adrian and Gillian Bayford from the Haverhill area of Suffolk won £148,656,000 in the EuroMillions draw on Friday 10 August 2012, a jackpot of €190 million. Adrian, 41, co-owned a music shop in the town and Gillian, 40, was a healthcare assistant. They had a young son and daughter.
Adrian had been watching a film. When he switched channels, a message on screen said one ticket had won. His own five lines were upstairs, still unchecked. He checked them on his phone and saw every number match.
They went public at a press conference at Down Hall Country House Hotel in Bishop's Stortford.
In 2013 the couple separated, a split reported as caused by the pressure of the win, and they later divorced. They had bought a Grade II-listed estate with a cinema and billiards room, which was sold in 2021. In 2016 Adrian went back to retail, opening a music and film memorabilia shop in Cambridge.
